Operation Fat to Fit: Week Twelve

Have you ever gotten a deal so sweet that you hurried out of a store after you paid the cashier before they could figure out that you pretty much robbed them? That was me yesterday. I stocked up on boxes of Dark Chocolate Crunch Cheerios (which are friggin amazing) for about $1 a box after combining coupons with a BOGO. As soon as I got into the car, I ripped a box open and began eating it by the handful. Am I the only person who believes that cereal calories don’t count unless you are eating it out of a bowl with milk and a spoon? This mindset is probably what helped me achieve the status of “obese”, so I really should start counting those calories.

I know you are all dying for an update on what I am reading right now. Oh, you aren’t? Well, let me go ahead and share anyway. I finished Yellow Crocus, which wasn’t bad. The style of writing was reminiscent of a child’s story book, but I believe it was because the author was trying to capture the point of view of an uneducated slave and a really young girl. I would love for the writing to have been more mature, but I get what the author was trying to achieve. I often rely on the Epic Reads blog to direct me to my next read, because they are the connoisseurs of all things Young Adult and New Adult. So when they recommended Cruel Beauty by Rosamund Hodge, I added myself to the waiting list for a Kindle copy through my local library. After having been on the waiting list for a few weeks, I received an email letting me know that a copy was now available for me to download, which I did immediately. It probably won’t interest many of you. Based on the synopsis, it may not interest me, either. But I have been surprised before, so we shall see if Epic Reads is on the money this time around.

On Sunday, I went walking after the class we attend at the Masjid. The plan was for me to walk as far as I could along the route we would normally drive to get home, and my husband would pick me up after I had been walking for about 45 minutes. I’ve walked longer than that before, so it was no big deal. In true Afsana fashion, I was sadly unprepared. I forgot to bring a bottle of water so about two miles into the walk, I was tempted to drink a half-full bottle of water that I spotted in the grass. Just kidding! I was parched, but not quite that desperate. The fact that it was 88 degrees outside and I was walking in full sun didn’t help matters any. I kept glancing at my watch to see how many calories I was burning, and used that number to keep pushing myself further. When I had been walking for about 50 minutes, I got a call from my husband. It was about time! Only he wasn’t calling to tell me that he was on his way. Apparently there was a janaza (Islamic funeral) being held, so he was going to be a little longer. Suddenly, thinking of how thirsty I was felt very selfish. The person that the janaza was being held for would never again have a chance to walk along the beautiful street I was on. There would be no more 88 degree days in Orlando for them. Sometimes, that reminder is what I need in order to take full advantage whatever time is left of my life here. It’s so easy to postpone my workout until tomorrow, or put off meal planning for later. What I forget easily is that today may be my last tomorrow. I don’t want to look back on my life and wish I had lived more, instead of having simply existed. When my husband finally pulled up, I hopped in the car and pulled my sneakers off. He told me how far I had gone according to the odometer and I smiled a tired smile, thankful that I had breath in my lungs and strength in my legs to carry me so far.

With that being said, I am the same weight that I was last week. I have no excuse to offer, only that I may or may not have indulged in a few extra snacks. On a happy note though, my waist is trimmer. If you subscribe to my feed on Twitter, you will know that I am able to fit into a pair of jeans that I wasn’t able to fit for the past five years (maybe even longer than that). When I tried them on last week, I was able to sit comfortably in them after doing some bending and contorting. Don’t act like you don’t know what I’m talking about. But this week, I could fit them straight out of the dryer. I know that I have been doing Zumba for quite a while now, and I think the lack of pounds dropped might mean that it’s time to switch things up. I am doing a swap with a friend for a workout that I’ve had my eye on for a while now. I’ll let you know how it goes!
